My name is Sumanshu Goyal, and I am from Khanna, Punjab. I am from the EIC branch and come from a business-oriented background. I have a keen interest in fast mathematics.

What was the procedure of the placement that took place? (Shortlisting criteria, coding or aptitude test, number of interviews)
The company visited Thapar University during the second week of September. There was an aptitude test and a HR Round.
What was the difficulty level of the interview? (1- very easy, 10-very difficult)
The difficulty level of interview for me was 7.
Tell us about the written/online test. (Aptitude, Coding, Test Platform, etc)
There was an aptitude test, during which I had to solve 50 questions in just 5 minutes. These questions primarily revolved around fundamental mathematics concepts.
Tell us about the HR interviews, if any, specifying the number of rounds and questions asked.
In my HR interview, the interviewer asked about my comfort level in a particular subject. I mentioned I was good at basic math. Then, they gave me a challenge to mentally multiply 78 by 79 without using pen and paper. This was a test to see how quickly and accurately I could solve math problems in my head.
What were the key factors of your selection?
Ever since I was a child, I’ve had a deep passion for solving basic mathematics problems. So, the questions asked during the interview were right up my alley. They were not just aligned with my interests but also fell well within my expertise. Moreover, during the interview, the interviewers got to see firsthand my strong ability to think quickly and solve problems mentally.
What would you like to advise juniors for cracking the technical round of this company?
There was no technical round in the recruitment process of Axxela. I was gone through only HR rounds.
According to you, what role do extracurricular activities as well as participation in societies play?
Volunteering with Virsa Society and being a part of Thapar’s Cricket team have been instrumental in shaping my overall personality and character.
Were there any companies you got rejected from after appearing for their interview? If yes, then tell us about your rejection story and what do you think were the reasons for your rejection?
I encountered setbacks in my job search, facing rejections from two prominent companies: BAIN and VARROC. The initial rejection from BAIN, which was my very first interview, could be attributed to my nervousness. Given that the role was for a Data Analyst, and my true passion lies in trading, I didn’t dwell on it too much. Subsequently, I channeled my determination and put in relentless effort to prepare for the VARROC interview, as it offered a position aligned with my career aspirations. Unfortunately, the interview did not unfold as I had hoped. In these challenging times, the support of my parents played a pivotal role in helping me navigate these rejections. They provided me with much-needed consolation, reminding me that there would be many more opportunities, and encouraged me to persist in honing my skills. Finally, my perseverance paid off, and I secured a position at AXXELA.
What message would you like to give to your juniors regarding the stress they go through during placement season?
I want to share a message of staying positive, calm, and patient. In the face of challenges and setbacks, it’s vital to maintain a positive mindset. Stay calm, keep your composure, and most importantly, be patient. Persistence and dedication to honing your skills will surely lead to favorable outcomes. So, remember, with the right attitude and continuous self-improvement, success will be just around the corner.
